Abstract

We agree with Alley and Clarke, and Davies, who regard pneumonia of sheep to be of complex aetiology. Both groups of workers have referred to work at the Moredun Institute, Edinburgh, which has shown that acute pneumonic pasteurellosis can be induced in specific pathogen-free (SPF) lambs by parainfluenza virus type 3 (PI3) and Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A, serotype 1. In this system, PI3 virus enhances the pathogenicity of P. haemolytica and we have shown this interaction occurs with several serotypes of P. haemolytica. Davies and his co-workers have also shown this effect, but apparently without clinical illness.
