We agree with Alley and Clarke, and Davies, who regard pneumonia of sheep to be of complex aetiology. Both groups of workers have referred to work at the Moredun Institute, Edinburgh, which has shown that acute pneumonic pasteurellosis can be induced in specific pathogen-free (SPF) lambs by parainfluenza virus type 3 (PI3) and Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A, serotype 1. In this system, PI3 virus enhances the pathogenicity of P. haemolytica and we have shown this interaction occurs with several serotypes of P. haemolytica. Davies and his co-workers have also shown this effect, but apparently without clinical illness. Unfortunately, these authors did not refer to the serotype of P. haemolytica which was used in their experiments nor describe the type of pneumonic lesions that were inducedThe whole of the literary matter of the New Zealand Veterinary Journal is copyright Taylor and Francis, Downloading this article signifies agreement with the terms and conditions of electronic access.
