Abstract

Could anybody explain to me why we as veterinarians, or rather the NZVA, has adopted a policy of endorsing the present Government`s decision to allow the export of live sheep, and yet we have seen minimal comment on, or explanation by the NZVA, of the reasons for this policy being adopted? As an issue, it may seem to be of minor interest to the majority of veterinarians, but to those involved in the Meat Division of the MAF it must hold considerable interest. I, personally, find it difficult to understand why so much work is put into ensuring that the methods of slaughter used in New Zealand are as humane as possible, and yet we can endorse the export of animals to undergo ritual slaughter in a region which, as I understand, has what would appear to be minimal interest in animal welfare…
