Abstract: Hereditary neuraxial oedema of calves in the Polled Hereford breed has been reported from America (Cordy et al 1969) and Australia (Blood and Gay, 1971). We wish to record what we believe to be the occurrence of this condition in New Zealand. A group of 15 Polled Hereford/Friesian cross heifers mated to a Polled Hereford/Friesian cross bull produced three affected calves and a further group of 8 Polled Hereford/Friesian cross cows mated to a different Polled Hereford/Friesian cross bull produced one calf with this condition Since breeding records were not kept, detailed studies of pedigrees could not be undertaken
