Abstract: Play is fun but it is also important for the well-being of animals. Many species of animals, including many species kept as social companions, play well into adulthood. It is required for the normal development of the brain, for honing muscles and developing social skills and, like all things of value, play is costly. Its persistence despite being expensive with regards to the calories consumed and the risks of injury highlights its importance. Encouraging play and helping your clients understand normal species specific play and how to engage in play is important to the wellbeing of the animals we keep as companions.
