Abstract: Many new veterinary graduates were born in the 1980s and 1990s. This generation is often referred to as Generation Y (Gen Y) or the New Millennium Generation (Millennials). A number of authors have suggested options for optimising the contribution of the perceived strengths and minimising the impact of the perceived challenges that have been argued to be the features of this generation. This paper will consider some of these perceived strengths and weaknesses. The purpose of this paper is to provide veterinarians and practice managers with ideas for attracting and retaining new veterinary graduates. The accompanying session will also provide an opportunity for a panel of new veterinary graduates to express their views about themselves, their role in the workplace, their future and the profession.
