Abstract: In mixed animal and equine practice, Equine Dentistry can easily become 10-20 % of your equine caseload of your existing client base. It may even give you enough work to employ an extra veterinarian to help share the afterhours case load! However you do need to service these existing clients better to ensure the revisits, extra work volume and profits will follow – along with the added bonus of referral of new clients to you - to ensure growth of the practice. Vets are in the best position to offer high quality dentistry at affordable prices because one vet can perform the clinical exam, the anaesthesia AND the dental work in the one visit, thus being far more efficient than the requirement for one equine lay tooth floater and one anaesthetist! Equine Veterinary Dentistry continues to enjoy rapid growth at every level –from client education, through to veterinary education and publication of research material. The benefits with this are not only to the owner and the veterinarian, but also have the horse’s wellbeing in mind. Every horse in your area is a potential dental patient should you chose to learn how to educate owners, develop skills and techniques to examine and treat their mouths. This will maximise comfort and subsequently the oral health of the horse when eating and when ridden.
