Abstract: Problems with the dentition in young patients are not uncommon. The time period from the puppy vaccination series through to de-sexing at around 6 months is often an important point of contact with the veterinarian. Identifying and discussing any potential problems at this early stage may lead to an increased willingness to treat. Early intervention may also help the patient avoid a lifetime of discomfort, or prevent future complications from occurring. There are also unique characteristics of jaw growth and deciduous tooth anatomy that necessitate action within a narrow period of time. The differences between deciduous and permanent dentition dictate different treatment options to those available in adult dogs.
