Abstract: The successful use of equine semen whether chilled or frozen relies on several components. Some of these the veterinarian is able to control, others are not controllable. An understanding of the limitations of the system allow for more informed communication with the client and hopefully less stress when everything appears to go wrong. This article will concentrate on the manipulation of the mare to optimise the timing of insemination, and also the handling and evaluation of equine semen in order to provide accurate feedback to stallion managers. One of the overlooked factors for success is communication – with the client and also semen managers.
