Abstract: Normal gestation length in the Thoroughbred is about 340 days. Abortion means the termination of pregnancy before 300 days. Stillbirth refers to the loss of a foetus after 300 days at which time a foal could possibly survive. Investigation involves collecting history: about the mare, the period during pregnancy (illness, vaccinations, reproductive examination information) and also previous pregnancies by the mare. A post mortem examination of the foetus and placental membranes is essential for increasing the likelihood of a meaningful diagnosis...
