Abstract: Pregnancy diagnosis underpins the bovine caseload of rural veterinary practices. Rapport between producers and their veterinarian is often forged after long days in the cattle yards, performing this most basic of cattle veterinary services. Much like small animal vaccinations or equine dentals, pregnancy diagnosis forms a foundation for further opportunities to serve our clients. The veterinary industry remains under constant pressure from laypeople wishing to supplant our role in delivering this and many other core veterinary procedures. Lay people primarily capitalize on producer’s perception of value, either by offering a cheaper service or by creating a perception of offering a premium service. Regardless, the best defense of veterinarians is to be conversant on the economics of pregnancy diagnosis and able to demonstrate an advantage in their services to compete with professional lay operators.
