Abstract: Private vets have an important role to play in emergency animal disease surveillance and response. However, the Matthews report into Australia’s preparedness for footand-mouth disease (FMD) identified several barriers to engagement between the public and private sector, affecting Australia’s capacity to detect FMD in a timely manner and to engage private veterinarians in a large emergency response. This presentation will describe several initiatives to address these gaps.
