Abstract: The many different areas of calf rearing, such as colostrum management, nutrition, and the calf environment are not stand alone features of a successful system but rather pieces of a puzzle which interact with each other to affect the overall outcome. These pieces are not always positive and a successful outcome (ie healthy calves) relies on these pieces not only interacting, but also being in balance with each other. This paper will discuss some of the pieces of the calf rearing puzzle, along with practical ways to achieve best practice on farm.
