Abstract: From the time we as veterinarians commenced our tertiary education it was emphasised that before we commence treatment we must make a diagnosis. To that end a detailed history and a physical examination, which may include clinical pathology, microbiology, imaging and necropsy, are essential tools for the veterinary clinician. Particularly when veterinarians are dealing with livestock enterprises, as part of the diagnostic process and prior to deciding whether it is appropriate to prescribe medications the veterinarian must take into account many factors including the management, species of livestock, standard of animal husbandry, competence of stockmen, the animals’ nutritional status, physical facilities on the property, biosecurity plans for the property and the endemic disease status of the property.
