Abstract: In 1996, after a number of tragic suicides within the veterinary profession, the WA Division of the AVA developed the concept of a mentoring scheme. The basic aim of the Graduate Support Scheme (GSS) was to provide a safety net for newly graduated Veterinarians, who were felt to be most at risk from the factors thought to predispose people to depression and suicide. The scheme has run every year since then, and has been developed, refined and expanded since then. Fundamentally, the scheme aims to allocate every local newly graduated veterinarian with an experienced veterinary mentor.
