Abstract: A number of distinct herpesviruses have been identified in a range of wild, caged and domestic birds. Probably the most significant of these is the pigeon herpesvirus which has been associated with acute generalised infections and high mortalities in young birds, particularly in squab rearing establishments. Sporadic outbreaks of a similar disease are recorded in owls (e.g. Pacheco's virus), cormorants and numerous other species.
