Abstract: Biomedical research using animals has four main goals: (1) to provide fundamental biological knowledge (2) to provide models for the study of disease (3) to test potential therapies, surgical procedures and medical devices (4) to test new drugs for efficacy, safety and to test chemicals for potential toxicity. Laboratory animal science is a discipline devoted to the humane care of animals used to accomplish these four goals.
