Abstract: Consumers perceive pasture-based systems as 'natural' and therefore better for cow welfare than confinement systems. Legislators, milk processing companies and industry affiliates tend to share this belief. However, scientific evidence suggests that there are advantages and disadvantages to dairy cow welfare, health and reproductive performance associated with pasture-based systems of milk production. Additionally, pasture-based and confinement systems are heterogeneous and evolving making valid comparisons more challenging. This paper will tackle this system complexity.
