Abstract:
Increased symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) has been reported in some dogs with lymphoma at the time of diagnosis. We aimed to assess whether Australian dogs with multicentric-large-B-cell-lymphoma (MLCBL) without known renal disease have an increased SDMA at the time of diagnosis compared with a control group.
Medical records of an Australian private referral hospital were reviewed to identify dogs with multicentric-large-B-cell-lymphoma and controls with serum SDMA concentrations and renal parameters measured at the time of diagnosis between 2018-2023. Serum creatinine, SDMA, urine specific gravity and body condition score between the two groups were compared using the Mann Whitney U test. P < .05 was considered statistically significant.
A total of 17 dogs diagnosed with MLBCL and 15 controls were included. Median SDMA was 12 ug/dL (IQR, 10; 19) in dogs with MLCBL and 8 ug/dL (IQR, 6; 10) in the control group.
This highlights the need for careful interpretation of SDMA concentration in dogs with newly diagnosed MCBCL, as increases may be present and not associated with renal disease.
