Abstract:

Dairying in the upper Waikato is under increasing pressure to consider more nutrient-efficient farming systems. To maintain water quality in the Waikato River, and prevent further decline in the quality of the hydro lakes of the Waikato, the leaching loss from the average Waikato dairy farm may need to drop around 40 percent. Achieving this could require significant changes to dairy farming systems and dairy veterinarians will need to keep pace with the implications for cow health and welfare.
