Pyometra in the bitch

Abstract: Pyometra is the accumulation of pus within the uterus. If it is to occur, it occurs following a normal heat cycle of the bitch and requires progesterone maintenance (the same as a pregnancy). Clinical signs of pyometra are representative to the general systemic signs of any infection. Lethargy, pyrexia, vomiting, purulent vaginal discharge (if the cervix is open), polyuria and polydipsia. Traditionally pyometra has been thought to occur in old dogs only, however we now commonly see and recognise the disease in young dogs...
