When should my dog be desexed?

Abstract: Ovariohysterectomy in bitches and castration in dogs, would be one of the most common procedures undertaken in veterinary practices today. In recent years there has been a push from welfare societies, breeders and governments to desex at younger ages to try and curb the unwanted/stray dog problems faced by Australia. In order to best advise their clients, it is important for veterinarians to have a good understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of desexing in order to best advise their clients. From research through the literature it is evident that there is no one rule which can be followed for every animal, and assessment of the animal in question must occur to best advise the client and provide the best outcome for the animal involved...
