Abstract: The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (nccam.nih.gov) defines Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) as health care practices that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine. CAM includes natural products such as herbal medicines, vitamins, and minerals; mind and body medicine including relaxation exercises and acupuncture; and manipulation therapy including spinal manipulation and massage. CAM may also incorporate homeopathy and energy healing including magnets, Reiki, healing touch, and telepathy. Acupuncture treats patients by inserting needles at specific points on the meridians to correct imbalances in the flow of Qi. Homeopathy is based on the principle that a substance (plant, animal, mineral) that causes symptoms in a healthy individual will cure that disease by a remedy that is diluted beyond measurable amounts. The Bach flower remedies are a form of vibrational medicine made from spring water infused with wild flowers, preserved in brandy or glycerine.
