Abstract: Significant numbers of sheep and cattle are grazed in the semi-arid central western and north western rangelands of Queensland such as the Mitchell Grass Downs and associated regions where native grasses predominate (Figure 1). In these regions annual rainfall is very variable and typically less than 500mm and the soils are characteristically vertosols (brown and grey cracking clays).
