Diseases and management of sheep in cropping zones

Abstract: Given renewed interest in sheep in the cropping zones, this paper will outline some of the most common problems for sheep management and diseases in the cropping zones. Management can have a deleterious impact on sheep health, welfare and profitability; while some diseases found in the cropping zones result in severe losses at times. While correcting some of the management issues might be difficult, as that requires a more intensive consulting approach and time, it is also invaluable to have this knowledge to offer effective solutions for the farmers, and to understand the reasons for some of the problems that can be found in the cropping zone. For veterinarians in the cropping zones, encountering more sheep work as sheep numbers rise, a good knowledge of some this diseases and management will assist them improve the lot of the sheep and their keepers. Diseases common to the high rainfall zone are also discussed in context of their impact on sheep in the cropping zones.
