Abstract:
Livestock export is a highly political and divisive issue in Australia with media attention sparking widespread community interest. This has resulted in major regulatory changes to the trade over the past 10 years with the most recent being the development of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) for all slaughter and feeder livestock exported from Australia. The new legislation is the first time the government has regulated the trade beyond the port of export in Australia. Veterinarians accredited by the Department of Agriculture are prescribed in export legislation and have specific duty requirements for pre export preparation of animals and reporting to the department.
