Abstract: Bull management in southern (temperate) regions is addressed within the context of both beef and dairy operations. Aspects covered include evaluation (focusing on bull breeding soundness) and selection, health and biosecurity, nutrition, monitoring, social and sexual behavior, and various problems including heat stress and genetic/environmental interactions. Noteworthy genetic bull problems, both Mendelian and multi-factorial, will also be discussed, as will appropriate restraint procedures and facilities. Related topics include the use of yearling bulls and the economics of natural service bulls on dairies.
