Abstract: Research on animals is a highly controversial topic to the general public, with societies across the world becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the notion of forced harm on laboratory animals. Works, such as Peter Singer's Animal Liberation1, have heightened the public awareness of this form of animal use. Russell and Birch drove change to the justification of animal use by developing the 3Rs of replace, reduce and refine, which has substantially adjusted the mind set and approach of researchers in animal experiments. But the public are still uncomfortable with the perceived unnecessary harm that comes to animals during research.
