Abstract: Modern zoos and aquariums exist for the purposes of conservation, education, research and recreation, with their core goal being the conservation of wildlife and preservation of biodiversity. Society’s expectations around animal welfare, including that of zoo animals, have changed over the years, in line with an increased understanding of the physical and psychological needs of animals. In their care for animals, modern Australian zoos strive to place themselves at the forefront of understanding and meeting their animals’ needs and welfare requirements. Best practice zoo animal welfare is important, not only because it provides the best care for our animals, but because it also makes excellent business sense for zoos seeking to meet their community engagement and biodiversity conservation goals.
