Abstract: Prescribing & supply of prescription animal remedies or other Schedule 4 poisons, and other veterinary medicines by a veterinarian is regulated in Western Australia by 3 separate agencies and their respective legislation. Access to restricted poisons on the basis of prescription by a veterinary surgeon and the manner in which these may be supplied or dispensed are specified in poisons regulations.1 Control of use legislation requires the use of any veterinary medicine off-label to be authorised by a veterinarian in writing.2 Veterinary surgeons regulations specify the requirements for the prescribing or supply of a Schedule 4 or other poisons by a veterinarian and cross references the other regulations.3 A principal requirement of legislation is that the veterinarian must have adequate records, including to whom drugs were prescribed, animals to be treated, disease or reason for supply, the drug, the quantity supplied and the dose (rate) to be used.
