Abstract: In December 1958, the writer was called to see a new-born Jerusalem donkey foal which was reported to be unable to suck. The foal was very bright and active and it was able to suck the mare`s colostrum from a baby`s bottle. Auscultation of the thorax revealed extraneous cardiac sounds which were unfamiliar to the writer, while the cardiac cycle sounds were irregular in both time and amplitude. A guarded prognosis was given
