Hydrallantois in Ayrshire cows

Abstract: This is to report the occurrence of a number of cases of hydrallantois in a dairy herd near Palmerston North. A farmer owning approximately 100 Ayrshire cows had purchased his bulls from a single source for 16 years. Bulls were changed each 3 years. During the period 1963-65, eighteen cows developed excessively large abdomens during late pregnancy. The majority of affected animals became unable to stand and eventually died or were killed. Two cows survived until calving and one of these died post-partum
