Abstract: Although the economic importance of mixed strongyle infections in sheep in New Zealand appears to be generally recognized, little is known of the incidence and geographic distribution of the various constituent species. Recently data obtained from sheep samples submitted to Animal Health Laboratories in this country were used to ascertain the incidence of the strongyle Haemonchus contortus (McKenna et al 1973). The results of this study suggested that such records may provide a useful, indication of the relative incidence of infection between districts, seasons and years. The present study, the first of three, was therefore undertaken to make further use of this material in providing basic information on the relative incidence of the other strongyle parasites of sheep in New Zealand.
