Abstract: I wish to record a case of tick paralysis in a dog shortly after its arrival from Australia. The dog was a 3-year-old Corgi which had been in the North Ryde area of Sydney for year. North Ryde is a known tick area so the dog was kept in an isolated pen, but was allowed out for exercise night and morning. The dog was dipped with 0.5% malathion and examined as required by New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries import requirements, before being flown to Christchurch the following day. The first symptoms were seen 5 days after arrival. Initially a slight cough was observed, thought to be a bone stuck in the throat, but when the cough became more pronounced and accompanied by ataxia, veterinary advice was sought…
