Abstract: A national survey was undertaken to estimate the prevalence and distribution of bovine mastitis. It was planned as a model which could be repeated at intervals. Part 1 of this series of papers gave the general background and details of some, preliminary reference studies. The present paper records the methods used in the survey, and the results of laboratory tests. The characterization of microorganisms isolated from the milk samples will be described in Part 3.
