Abstract: The design of a national mastitis survey, the methods used and the results have been described in Parts 1 and 2 of this series (Elliott et al 1976; Tattersfield et al 1976). This paper reports on the microorganisms found in the 3956 composite milk samples obtained frorm cows in 399 herds. Methods of identifying the organisms are described in detail so that comparisons can be made with results from further surveys.
