Abstract: The serious economic effects of acute pneumonia in sheep on individual farms cannot be disputed. Outbreaks of the disease can afflict sheep of all ages, sometimes producing spectacular mortality rates of up to 15%. Sporadic deaths may also contribute to these losses and surveys on properties in the North Island to date have estimated that total deaths from pneumonia may constitute 9 to 10% of all sheep mortalities.
