Abstract: Little published data is available on the distribution and prevalence of viral diseases in the New Zealand cattle population. Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus and bovine virus diarrhoea (BVD) virus appear on serological grounds to be widespread. A serological survey by Fastier and Hansen also suggests that parainfluenza type 3 (PI3) virus is common in the North Island. We now wish to report the results of a survey of 100 North Island cattle from 20 widely distributed North Island properties, from which the sera were tested for antibodies to IBR, BVD and PI3 viruses and to 3 serotypes of reovirus
