Abstract: It was pleasing to see the recent letter by Harris and Alley in your journal offering an alternative hypothesis to that put forward in our recent paper (Kirton et al.), based on the data we presented. We agree that it is only by testing various hypotheses that the correct answer to the questions raised can be finally resolved. However, we were surprised at their comment that “The authors observe that no reason could be given for these phenomena, but that pneumonia could not be shown to reduce final liveweight or carcass weight.” We assume that either they did not understand our paper or alternatively, they did not complete reading it…
