Abstract: When I was invited to give a paper at this conference I was also sent a draft of the scientific programme. I was not particularly surprised to find that most of the programme was of little direct interest to me. This has been the case for several years. There has also been only a small contribution from research scientists at Wallaceville over the same period. I can only surmise that the sort of work that we are doing is, by and large, of no interest to the bulk of the veterinary profession in New Zealand. And yet, when I first started at Wallaceville more than twenty years ago, we would have provided at least 50 percent, and on occasion more, of the scientific programme. At that time, most of the staff we reengaged in diagnostic work, and such research as was done emanated from diagnostic problems…
