Abstract: In responding to the criticisms outlined in my article on Scrapie, in the October issue of this journal, Dr Adlam has at least come into the open and, unfortunately, has verified the fears which I have had for a number of years. Namely, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries neither recognises the full implications, nor the risks to which they are subjecting New Zealand`s prime industry. Further, I am bound to say that Dr Adlam, as Director of the Animal Health Division, by his reply appears happy to accept responsibility for these risks and their long term effects should a slow virus disease become established in New Zealand, even though they may occur after his retirement. Dr Adlam`s opinion of what is responsible and what is irresponsible is amazingly naive…
