Probable leptospiral abortion in mares

Abstract: Equine abortions in a trotting and a thoroughbred mare were investigated. In the case under review three pregnant and one non-pregnant mare were grazing with a dozen pregnant cows. The mares were put into the paddock with these cows 3 to 4 months prior to the abortions. Previously the mares had no contact with one another. Unfortunately only the two mares which aborted were available for investigation. No samples could be taken from the cows, owing to practical obstacles. It was noted that two cows had aborted on an earlier occasion. No accurate records were available. No foetus was available for examination from the first mare from which the following samples were obtained: placenta, serum and urine…
