Abstract: We are confused by the arguments advanced by Messrs Hicks, Burr, Marshall and Vidler on the relative merits of testicular palpation and the CFT for the diagnosis of Brucella ovis infection in rams. Perhaps they are confused about their own role in the control of brucellosis in a flock. We accept that testicular palpation has limitations as a diagnostic test for ovine brucellosis in individual rams, but this does not mean that palpation has no place in the control of the disease in a flock (ignoring for the moment, its value in detecting other testicular lesions)
