Abstract: The entering of a new decade allows a good excuse to list past achievements, take stock and plan for the future. I intend to do this not only because we are at the start of the 1980`s, but also because I believe the whole profession has arrived at a stage when substantial change is both inevitable and desirable if the profession is to express its potential in society. I need first to define the function of our profession, and a fairly concise definition which has been used from time to time is: The principal objectives of the veterinary profession are to render service to society, to relieve animal suffering, and to maintain and enhance the health, productivity and usefulness of all animals. This then is our stated function. How well have we carried it out in the past, how are we performing now, and what does the future hold?…
