Abstract: Edwards and Daines in reporting a recent case history in this Journal (dealing with the conditions surrounding a Leptospira pomona abortion-storm in a piggery) raised several points with regard to the development of satisfactory treatment and control programmes. In particular, two important issues (when considering the stocking of a new piggery) are testing of new stock before purchase and selection from unmated rather than pregnant stock. In the particular case discussed, these steps were not considered and a leptospiral infection was transmitted and was subsequently endemic on the new property. However, several factors emerge from the history of the stock and from the treatments applied, suggesting that there is a need for more specific attention to treatment considerations
