Cerebellar degeneration in the border collie

Abstract: We wish to record the occurrence of a cerebellar degeneration in a Border Collie in New Zealand that appears to be progressive and familial. An 8 week old Border Collie bitch was submitted live to Invermay Animal Health Laboratory with a history of a progressive ataxia beginning at the age of 6 weeks. Another pup in the litter of 4 had been similarly affected and had been destroyed by the breeder. The remaining 2 pups appeared unaffected. Further history from the breeder indicated that in 1975, 3 pups from a litter of 4 had exhibited ataxia, beginning at about 2 months of age. Their condition deteriorated markedly and they were destroyed.
