Abstract: We wish to report the results of the preliminary differentiation of Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo and balcanica isolates from opossums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and cattle. The isolation of hardjo from opossums in New Zealand was first reported by de Lisle et al. and Brockie. The isolates obtained by de Lisle et al. were identified by fluorescent antibody typing according to the method of Hodges and Ekdahl, and Brockie`s isolates were identified as hardjo by provisional serotyping. The possibility was considered that opossums may form a reservoir of hardjo associated with bovine hardjo infection. More recently, however, Hathaway et al. reported that a large proportion of New Zealand opossums was infected with serovar balcanica
