Abstract: The fact that I have but a short span of involvement with the New Zealand Veterinary Association may not be all bad since it allows me to stand back and assess the situation as I see it without any previous bias or prejudices. During that ten year period I have listened to each presidential address and more recently when preparing for my own address I have read each one carefully again. I noted when considering some of the current needs of our profession that many of the remarks are still very pertinent. I have chosen the title “politics, professionals and promotion” because I believe that these three are inextricably linked in the activities in which the veterinary profession in New Zealand now finds itself involved and this situation will not change in the next few years…
