Bacteriological observations on exudative epidermitis of pigs in New Zealand

Abstract: A porcine skin disease resembling exudative epidermitis (X.E.) was investigated in 8 pig herds from different locations in the South Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas of New Zealand. Use of a selective medium enabled the recovery of Staphylococcus hyicus from 18/22 (82%) affected piglets, 3/28 (11%) apparently healthy in-contact piglets, 1/16 (6.2%) sows which also appeared healthy, and from the atmosphere of two buildings housing affected pigs. The bacteriological characteristics of the organism were identical to those of S. hyicus which has been established as the cause of X.E. of pigs overseas. Our findings provide bacteriological confirmation of the existence of X.E. of pigs in New Zealand.
