Atrophic rhinitis of pigs in New Zealand

Abstract: A small scale abattoir survey was conducted to determine if atrophic rhinitis (AR) is present in pigs in New Zealand. Transverse sections of snouts at a level between the first and second upper premolars were examined from 428 slaughter pigs 20-30 weeks old. Three hundred and ninety three of these animals were derived from 9 herds, whilst the herd(s) of origin of the remainder was unknown. Characteristic gross lesions of AR, generally mild in severity, were found in 33.0% of the snouts examined. Slight lateral distortion of the snout was found in five animals but AR was recorded in only two of these individuals. One other animal showed brachygnathia superior. Lesions of AR were found in pigs from all nine herds of known origin. These preliminary findings suggest that a mild form of AR may be more common in pigs in New Zealand than is generally realised.
