Abstract: Several times during the past four years Council of the New Zealand Veterinary Association has been asked to comment on ear cropping of dogs. They have discussed it with the Small Animal Society of the `New Zealand Veterinary Association. The results of a meeting of the Small Animal Society of the New Zealand Veterinary Association have been reported in this journal (Busch, l983), and reasons for the Society`s stance given. The results have all been the same: affirmation of the previous policy “that the New Zealand Veterinary Association is opposed to cropping the ears of dogs for cosmetic purposes”. The basis for this policy is that it is an unnecessary mutilation. The performance of such mutilation by a veterinarian in New Zealand is regarded as unethical. This policy is restated to refresh the memories of members.
